This collection includes hats created in Autumn 2015. They are inspired by the natural scenes of Brooklyn, New York. A typical autumn in Brooklyn is filled with ivies creeping in different shades of red; balls of hydrangea seasoning without losing its amber shimmer and oak trees whose leaves turning to the color of gold as the fall goes deeper and deeper.

WING 翼

Wing 翼, 2015. Ivory sinamay teardrop fascinator base from London; blue veil from London; cornflower blue ostrich feather from London; diamonte pin from New York.

I have always wanted to make a hat that looks like wings. Wings that can lifted by the wind should breath with a sense of lightness and smoothness, and alter the shapes with the flowing wind.

2015. Smartie sinamay fascinator base from London, black cotton fascinator base from Fujian, hand painted vintage flower from Boston, acorns and shells from Quincy, purple ostrich feather from London.

The color of gold is a gift from autumn. Shells, stones, acorns and flowers have all received its rich blessing of gold. "Harvest" is a customized fascinator for Ms. Li Weiwei from Beijing/Shenzhen. Weiwei used to live in London and she enjoys living along the sea. So I selected most of the materials from London and added shells from the beach of Quincy, Boston. "Harvest," therefore, becomes a reminder and carrier of important memories.

BLUE-WHITE ROSE

2015. Hand painted cotton fascinator base; vintage daisy flower from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; white crin from London; Klein blue and sky blue ribbon from New York; magpie feather from Storm King Art Center.

"Blue-White Rose" is customized made for Lisa Lam, the director of One Art Space in New York. The hat is designed to match with Lisa's blue and white dress, which she'll wear and join the Melbourne Cup Fashion Fundraiser event with the Australian Community in New York. Lisa was a Chinese American and she has precious qualities of Eastern and Western culture. The fascinator base is hand painted and dyed in Chinese paint, inspired by the blue-and-white porcelain from Yuan Dynasty. A rose, typical in America and Australia, is added to the fascinator base, to mark the reunion of the two cultures.

IRIS WIND

Iris Wind 鸢尾风, 2015. A vintage fascinator from Ara Qiu; black veil from London; vintage iris flower from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; shining yarn from Brooklyn; purple ostrich feather from London.

A friend gave me a vintage straw hat as a gift, and I decided to revive its glamour. Van Gogh’s depiction of violet iris is always among my beloved works. Just like Wang Wei’s poem, “in the silent solitude of the deep valley, blossoms thrive and fade away,” iris petals float to New York with the wind, will they also bring the scent of wheat field from Arles? "Iris Wind" now belongs to Yang Mei from Beijing. She is the founder of a kindergarten that takes care of children in rural areas as well as those whose parents leave for work in bigger cities. “This hat reminds me of quite a lot tenderness in my teenage years,” Yang said. “To be honest, my life as a young lady was not that easy and comfortable. But there were always some beautiful moments, that I waited, smiled, with a bit shyness so particular to a boyish young girl. That is exactly what I feel when I put on this hat --- a sense of gentle refinement and dreamlike elegance.”

FLAMINGO POND

2015. Handpainted cotton fascinator base; vintage flamingo pin from New Haven; cornblue flower from London; shell from Qunicy; shining yarn from Brooklyn; ivory crin from London.

“Fragrant grass waves along the river,
a Chinese egret rests alone at leisure.
Floating dust gone with the long night;
worldly worries disappear with peace in heart.”

I acquired a vintage flamingo brooch in New Haven by chance. For a long time I’ve been fascinated with this kind of bird, and its long, slender neck reminds me of Chinese egret. However, they differ vastly in terms of habits and temperaments. While flamingo enjoys living in groups, Chinese egret prefers solitariness, just like the differences in two cultures. So I came up with the idea of a Chinese flamingo, who rests alone on a riverland, accompanied by shells and rocks from Boston. This imagined bird bears mixed characteristics of the two. “Flamingo Pond” now belongs to Cherry in New York.

THE TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN PAVILION

The Temple of the Golden Pavilion 金阁寺, 2015. Handpainted silk fascinator base and black cotton fascinator base; vintage golden pin from New York; ivory sinamay from London; white loose feather from London.

This hat is made in a tribute to Mishima Yukio."Like a moon that hangs in the night sky, the Golden Temple had been built as a symbol of the dark ages. In this darkness, the beautiful, slender pillars of the building rested quietly and steadily, emitting a faint light from inside. Whatever words people might speak to the Golden Temple, it must continue to stand there silently, displaying its delicate structure to the eyes of the world and enduring the darkness that surrounded it." In The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Mishima Yukio describes the Temple of the Golden Pavilion - the symbol of beauty - from the protagonist's eye. The mysterious copper-gold bird on top of the temple doesn't move, but it flys eternally through time on its shining wings. Now it belongs to Lorriane Liu from New York.

VICTORIAN CAMEO

2015. Smartie sinamay fascinator base from London; ivory plain veil from London; geisha spot crin from London; vintage royal pin gifted from a New York friend; vintage daisy from an Iranian bookstore in Boston.

Mrs. Feng from Chengdu asked me to design a customized hat for her. The key words she gave me are: romantic, soft, and feminine. The Romantic style from early Victorian era immediately came to my mind. Borrowing from renaissance paintings and sculptures, the Victorian style is very much about the lyricism of nature. Thus I found a vintage shell cameo pin of classical early Victorian style for her. Tender and elegant, the female profile on the cameo resembles the lyrical heart of a young woman. "Victorian Cameo" was lost on its journey from New York to China. We both hope one day it'll show up at a lost treasure exhibition hosted by Chinese/U.S.A. custom.

CHERRY DYE 染樱

Cherry Dye 染樱, 2015. Hand painted cotton fascinator base; cornflower blue ostrich feather from London; vintage pin from Brooklyn; hand dyed cherry blossom.

I remember when we were both little, you loved chatting and I loved to smile. Once we sat side by side under a cherry blossom tree, listening to the whistling wind and birds’ melodies in the woods. Slowly we slipped into our dreams, where countless flowers drifted away. “Cherry Dye" now belongs to Yanyan from New York.

2015. Red velvet vintage hat from a New York friend; red veil from London; black mesh from Brooklyn; vintage chrysanthemum from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; a hedgehog pin from New York; vintage red beans from Morgan O'Hara's collection.

Autumn blossoms, luxuriantly flourishing;
Blooming it seems, while fading away slowly;
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity;
Delight and sorrow, gone too soon;
Today next year, falling blossoms and foliages will cover the ground.
However, they are no longer the ones today.

Altered from a vintage red velvet hat from a friend,
“Vanitas” is custom made for Chunyi in Beijing.

BUTTERFLY DREAM

Butterfly Dream 蝴蝶梦, 2015. Smartie sinamay fascinator base from London; ivory plain veil from London; dusky pink sinamay trim from London; geisha spot crin from London; vintage butterfly pin from Hansi; irory goose feather from London.

“I wonder why my harp has fifty strings,
Each with its flower-like fret an interval of youth.
Chuangzi is day-dreaming, bewitched by butterflies,
The sorrow heart of Emperor Wang is crying in a cuckoo.”
This hat is custom made for Cherry in New York City. It is a dream about spring, when winter is coming.

IRANIAN CLOCK

2015. Hand painted silk fascinator base; vintage clock sculpture from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; cornflower blue feather from London; vintage iris flower from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; black spot crin from London.

The vintage clock on the hat came from an used book store in Boston. When I was wandering in the store, the fabric flower in a large vase immediately caught my attention, and I started to have a conversation with the owner. He is an Iranian immigrant, who used to be a scholar of ancient Persian calligraphy, and started the bookstore after retirement. He was happy to know that I deign hats, and shared his stories with me and even gave me a small clock as a gift. I’ve been hoping to show him what this small clock has become in my next trip to Boston.

CHRYSANTHEMUM AND SWORD

Chrysanthemum and Sword 菊与刀, 2015. Smartie sinamay fascinator base from London; ivory shining yarn from Brooklyn; ivory sinamay from London; vintage chrysanthemum from an Iranian bookstore in Boston.

Ruth Benedict compared the contradictoriness in Japanese culture to chrysanthemum and sword: “The Japanese are, to the highest degree, both aggressive and unaggressive, both militaristic and aesthetic, both insolent and polite, rigid and adaptable…” The autumn chrysanthemum is a wonderful flower. Unlike tender yet fragile flowers in the spring, it braves the autumn frost with a heroic spirit. I was thus inspired and crafted this hat for independent women, who are both gentle and strong. "Chrysanthemum and Sword" is a gift from Qingzi in Beijing, to her dear friend Feixin in California, U.S.A.

2015. Handpainted cotton fascinator base; vintage geometric earring from New York; vintage daisy from Boston; flower branch from New York.

“From a wine pot amidst the flowers,
I drink alone without partners.
To invite the moon I raise my cup.
We're three, as my shadow shows up.
Alas, the moon doesn't drink.
My shadow follows but doesn't think.
Still for now I have these friends,
To cheer me up until the spring ends.”
--- Li Bai, Drinking Alone Under the Moon

I think this is the ideal state of solitude, developed from mourning one’s own loneliness to peacefully searching for one’s own solitude. Moon now belongs to New York graphic designer Mine Suda, as a gift for her designing the logo for Chapeau Echo.

2015. Hand painted silk fascinator base; vintage chrysanthemum from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; cornflower blue ostrich feather from London; geisha crin from London; stone from Morgan O'Hara's collection.

Geisha is the name of a crin fabric that I found in a shop in London. I am curious how this traditional Japanese culture affect terms in Western design. The fin de siècle Japonisme raised a craze for Asian aesthetics in Europe. Utagawa Kunisada’s depictions of Geisha in his woodblock prints were not considered high art in Japan at his time, but they were well received in Europe. The dramatic postures and rich expressions of the beautiful women in Utagawa’s works greatly inspired impressionists in their portraitures. Degas, Manet and Monet were avid collectors of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and these prints later influenced the West from design to architecture. For details about Geisha color, please refer to Geisha: Colors of the Flower and Willow World. "Geisha" now belongs to Liliana Gao, a gallerist in New York.

LITTLE BLACK DRESS

Little Black Dress 小黑裙,2015.10. Handpainted cotton fascinator bas; vintage  diamond jewlery from New York; ivory silk ribbon from New York; diamonte veil from London; black spot crin from London.

Invented by Coco Chanel a hundred years ago, the little black dress is still an essential component of every lady's closet. The color of black is simple and elegant, good for every occasion. I found a bow-tie shape diamond vintage pin in a store in East Village, New York and was inspired by the elegant shape of it. "The Little Black Dress" was created under the inspiration of simple beauty. The hat if a gift from Ms. Cai Xian based in San Francisco, to her friend who is far away.

2015. Red cotton fascinator base from New York; shining golden yarn from Brooklyn; silver sinamay leaf cut from London; pearl from Hansi Liao; vintage holly bush from Morgan O'Hara.

This hat is a Thanksgiving gift that is specially designed for Morgan O’hara: our friendship has spanned generations. Morgan is one of the earliest female artists who started working on conceptual art in the United States. She spends her life living and traveling across the world: Japan, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, England, and the United States. Now seventy four years old, Morgan is full of energy for her busy international schedule.

Morgan loves collecting vintage stuff. When I first started designing hats, she gave me a wood hat block, which was filled with dry flowers and small jewelries that she collected from different places in the world, and the holly bush on this hat comes from her collection. Holly bushes are often used as decorations for Christmas trees. When Thanksgiving season starts, the United States is filled with holiday atmosphere, and holly bushes can be seen everywhere. Now it belongs to Tianxing Wan.

GOD BLESS US WITH MERCY

God Bless Us with Mercy 2015. Black sinamay teardrop fascinator base from London; aqua sinamay fabric from London; night blue shining yarn from Brooklyn; vintage hydrangea from New York; vintage heartshape necklace from Hansi Liao.

Hansi gave me a heart-shaped vintage locket as a gift. When I opened it, a small piece of paper inside reads: God Bless Us with Mercy.” When this message was written is unknown, but the enduring power of the sentence is timeless. I made her this hat as a gift, with two turquoise wings resembling wings of a angel. In a very difficult moment in my life, Hansi shared with me a quote: “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” I will forever remember the strength in this verse. "God Bless Us with Mercy" now belongs to Hansi in New York.

PURPLE IRIS

2015. Smartie sinamay fascinator base from London; ivory plain veil from London; ivory loose feather from London; shining yarn from Brooklyn; vintage irises from an Iranian bookstore in Boston.

This purple hat is custom designed for Cherry in New York City. Purple is one of her favorite colors: “The color is a mixture of red and blue. It is a combination of warm and cool colors, ice and fire, passion and coldness, as well as boldness and introversion.” Maybe Van Gogh tried to find balance from such contradictions for his violet irises too.

Hand painted cotton fascinator base; aqua sinamay fabric from London; vintage purple flower from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; ivory sinamay shush trim from London; pearl from Hansi; vintage Christmas Tree cookie cutter from New York

Hand painted cotton fascinator base; golden shining yarn from Brooklyn; ivory goose feather from London; vintage purple star flower from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; Swarovski crystal chain from New York.

I got this kind of star-like purple flower by chance in an Iranian’s second-hand book store in Boston. It reminds me of the summer nights spent in my grandma’s yard in Chengdu when I was little. The air is not that clear in Chengdu; a few stars flicker tirelessly and vaguely. Now it belongs to Feng Yuan in Chengdu. It is the second hat I custom made for her, after the first one got lost on its way from New York to China.

FOR YILIN 致一林

For Yilin 给一林, 2015. Black and white vintage felt hat base found in New Haven; black and white ribbon rose; vintage daisy and yellow flowers from an Iranian bookstore in Boston; purple ostrich feather from London; vintage golden and pearl earing from New York.

Yilin has been a good friend of mine since our childhoods. We share love for writer Sanmao, obsession with old stuff, fascination of literature and art, and longing to be a world traveller. When we were in high school, Yilin and I often sat along wide streets at dark, moonless nights, drinking beer, enjoying ice cream, talking and laughing...Sometimes those restless street boys would whistle to us, but I never felt afraid when Yilin was with me. We explored streets and alleys on bicycles with loud laughters. We wept for romantic loves that faded away. Now Yilin is married and settled in Germany, and I couldn’t be present at her wedding due to visa issue. Time flies, as it has been four years since I saw her last time. I am assured that this fairy like girl finally found a home to return to after the twists and turns of her love journey. But I look forward all the more to her new life in a foreign land, with so many stories untold.

2015. Hand painted silk fascinator base; vintage flower pin from New York; purple ostrich feather from London; black spot crin from London.

“She is the daughter of the desert. Extreme heat, drought and poverty, she’s been through all of them, in addition to the most dreadful ordeal of her life - the brutal female genital mutilation. Nevertheless, she is still strong and beautiful like desert flowers after the rain.” Desert Flower, a movie based on the popular autobiography of Somalia-born supermodel Waris Dirie, tells the true story of Dirie’s escape from her childhood nightmare in Somalia and became a global supermodel. She later devotes herself into women’s liberation movement, and remains an activist against female genital mutilation.
