How Forests Dream promotion video. Dancer/Choreographer: Ching-In Chang; Artist: Echo He; Director: Zi Ye; Videographer: Weihan Zhou.

How Forests Dream is an immersive dance theater developed collaboratively by a group of creative people in New York. From 2020 to 2021, I worked closely with director Zi Ye, and dancer Ching-I Chang to develop the body of hats, the storyline, concept, visual presentation, and the choreography. We also get help from a group of talented friends who make the dream become true. How Forests Dream hopes to bring the audience together into a healing journey in the dreams woven by visible and invisible creatures in the forests, a realm that unfolds life and death. The audience will be invited to Fou Gallery - a 110-year old Brooklyn brownstone, where they will encounter a dancer and enter her daily life and dreams through a 7-act play activated by handmade vintage-style fascinators that represent dreams. Weaving together various media — dance, theatre, poetry and textile art, How Forests Dream unfolds time and space by bringing up seven symbolic offerings in Vajrayana Buddhism - Water (Argham), Flowers (Pushpe), Incense (Dhupe), Light (Aloke), Perfume (Ghande), Food (Naividya) and Music (Shabda) — from the human world and the nature. It invites the audience to reflect on the daily patterns of our attachment and desire, and experience a glimpse of awakening in the midst of a dream.

A selected part of How Forests Dream also participates in Atmospheres: The Pace Gallery Staff Show at Pace Gallery (508 West 25th Street, New York), thanks to the organization of Sarah Prickett and Garrett Smith.

How Forests Dream was first conceived on the anniversary of my husband's sudden death, also the peak of COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. After Eugene’s sudden death, I had a lot of wild dreams. I try to understand the meaning of life and death through these dreams. In the dreams I witnessed the whole process of recovery from bereavement. Many dreams have crossed the boundaries of time and space, reappeared in reality, and connected the past, the present, and the future. Dreams have also allowed me to further think about the meaning of life, the world after death and the existence beyond the visible world. After the sudden breakout of COVID-19, pandemic, violence, discrimination and death, miserable stories in the news have become part of our new normal. Regardless of all the sufferings in the human world, nature repeats its endless circle. In May 2020, I suddenly suffered from unbearable nerve pain. In great pain, I began to explore different esoteric healing methods and reconnect with nature. After I returned back to studio practice, I sought to use hat making as a way to describe the scenes I saw in dreams and meditations. I wish these fascinators could be presented through a dance theatre where visual and texts, body and space, art and nature are intertwined. Through the unique interactions, the audience will be able to reflect on the daily patterns of our attachment and desire, and experience a glimpse of awakening in the midst of a dream.

Salt and Mermaid

The work is collected by Lanzhi Dai, as a support to the project.

Stare at a piece of salt falling into the bathtub.
Dancing vigorously, spinning fast,
Its life burned out and turned into bubbles.
Bubbles turning into countless mermaids,
Jumping into the depths of the blue forest under the Haizi.
And disappear like this,
They sang in unison.
You have yours, I have my own life,
To explore.

Ginkgo Kiss

The work is collected by Yuan Zhou and Viviane Chen, as a support to the project.

The candlelight flickered,
With all layers of colors in the center.
It turned into a bonfire in the forest, crackling.
Ginkgo leaves keep falling to the ground,
Instantly turn yellow,
Like golden rain kissing the flame.
Then burn immediately,
Rise upwards,
Turn into stars.

Nine Suns

There are nine suns in the sky,
they said.
The lizard glided among the grass, and found the first sun in the dewdrop.
The whale swam in the deep sea, and found the second sun in the water column.
The cedar tree climbed in the forest, and found the third sun at the edges of the leaf.
The carp swam under the ice, and found the fourth sun in the cave.
The rhino played by the pool, and found the fifth sun in the shallows.
The hummingbird rested after the rain, and found the sixth sun in the rainbow.
The bobcat hunted in the swamp, and found the seventh sun in the snow.
The arctic fox paced among the flowers, and found the eighth sun in the mirror.
The vole traveled through the field, and found the ninth sun in the hole.

Tree with Blossom

Dreamed of a gallery on the second floor,
With French windows facing south.
Went down an outdoor concrete ladder,
Trees with blossoms standing on both sides.
Pink flowers,
Golden leaves,
Bronze branches.
Suddenly there was a gust of wind,
Every piece was falling gently,
All over my head,
All over my body,
All over the earth.

Cave Wedding

On a vast area of water,
There was only one narrow passage,
With a reef cave at the end.
People gathered there laughing and celebrating,
Only to find out that I arrived at my wedding venue.
The ceremony was in the cave,
Where the tide can’t reach.
Outside the cave,
Dining tables of all sizes were set up on the reef,
With umbrellas on top.

Baby and Seagull

Dreaming of a cradle with a baby,
Hung on the highest point of an electric pole,
A white seagull with a long-curved beak flying towards her,
We don’t know if we should worry or celebrate,
The seagull carrying the cradle back to us.
We took out pieces of silk Ming-style clothing,
Pink coat, purple skirt,
Beige coat, blue skirt,
Put them on her one by one.

Broken Mirrors and Eyes

Walking into a white cube,
Full of Broken mirrors and eyes on the ground,
Mirror pieces at the ceiling.
In the end,
Eyes are everywhere.

Pale Girl

The work is collected by Zhang En, as a support to the project.

I met a pale girl on the subway,
With flaxen hair, eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair.
It’s exactly the same color as her straw hat and the ribbon on her backpack,
As if she would meld into her hat.
I was still thinking about which painters are considered to have unique illusions about the world,
Who try to draw what only words or music can express,
The invisible world.

Silver Fishes

The work is collected by Zhang En, as a support to the project.

The images of the Sun on the water crackling like sparklers,
Fish crossing the valley under silver-gray ripples,
Golden water plants buried underneath.
Season by season,
The temperatures of the stone surfaces change,
So are their colors.
They are crops in the water,
Waiting to be harvested by the wind.

Anniversary

On our anniversary,
He gave me a watch made of paper,
With a blue lotus pond on it.
Suddenly, he had a heart attack and fell to the ground,
Everything after was like what had happened in reality.
I instantaneously realized that this watch can be used for time travel,
So, I set its time to the previous month,
Tried to make all kinds of efforts to save him, but all in vain.
In reality,
Another month and a half,
Time still inevitably passed by.
But in my dreams,
It can be folded for infinite times.
Finally, I realized that,
I can be infinite,
But we will always live in the gaps of time.
This is also something that is extremely scary to think about,
Because we will not be able to start a new soul experience.
When I realized this, I woke up.

試圖做各種努力去挽救,最終還是徒勞;

Dream in the Mexican Jungle

The work is collected by Eddie Wen, as a support to the project.

I lived in a jungle in Tulum, Mexico for some time. One day, after I visited the Mayan pyramids and returned to the jungle, I fell asleep very early and had a dream when I was about to wake up. I wrote it down as follows so that I won’t forget all the details.

My love and I wanted to leave the city where we were living to wander around the world. There was one thing we must do before we left, and that was, to meet his enemy for the last time. My love planned this meeting, which was a desperate fight to kill the enemy, while the other party did not know. The meeting site was on a stage, on the second floor, where actors were acting on it, and you could sit down and watch the show while drinking tea. In this way, even if there was violence, the audience only thought it was part of the show. I found the cafe in front of the stage, took a seat, and watched him walk up to the second floor worriedly. There was a gunshot, and the enemy's assistant was killed. The enemy was shot. My love was also injured. At the last moment, the musical actors dressed in gorgeous costumes and feathers walked up to the second floor with laughter, so the two had no choice but to flee. After the incident, I left immediately, tried to look for him, and met him at the monastery where we had promised each other. When I arrived, I found that he was shaved, with six Buddhism scars on his head. He walked out of the monk's room together with the master. At this moment, the enemy also arrived.

Inari in New Year 新年稻荷

The work is collected by Zhang En, as a support to the project.

Dreaming of me in a forest,
Standing on great heights with villagers.
Maybe I was not in a village,
But the village itself.
Everyone had torches in their hands,
Waiting for something to show up.
A group of white creatures in the distance,
Slender and graceful,
Like wolves,
Like foxes.
They suddenly jumped over the crowd and disappeared,
So the village started to look for these long-lost treasures.
Three months later, Ukiyo-e created three hundred years ago was found,
Utagawa Hiroshige painted the same scene.
That’s how I came to know their names.
On New Year's Eve,
The village waited for Inari to appear again.

Wedding on the Rooftop

The work is collected by Fiona Fei, as a support to the project.

Dreaming of him being stabbed in the back,
But he still strived to hold a wedding ceremony with me.
He ran up the narrow stairs to the roof,
Dragging me to follow him.
Blood seeped through his cracked leather jacket.
Finally, at the last few steps,
We saw the sky,
Strong sunlight reflected on our eyes.
On the roof,
We were going to hold a wedding ceremony,
With us two.

Dying in the Sun

In my dream, I saw the end of the world in spectacular beauty. Water with radioactive pollutants overflew everywhere, glowing like sunset, with different shades of red and orange. Walking forward with others, nobody made much preparation for the situation, and when the water came in front of us, we just tried to avoid it and move forward. Extremely calm, and with a look that did not care whatever came afterwards, I said goodbye to many friends along the way. There was nothing I must have, nothing I must do, and nothing I must become. I knew that I needed to do nothing, except for being the person I was at the moment.

DeEr Field

A family of deers, walking from rain to rainbow, then towards the night;
Fireflies didn’t appear from the grasses until mid-night.
They fall as stars, then rise;
Some become dews in the grass;
Some fly into the trees and the starry nights.
The light in the grass, and the stars in the sky;
All covered in the ripples of light.
Life goes on,
But for how long?
It evaporates, to our dismay,
Like the morning dew, day after day.

有的化入草里,变成露珠;
都笼罩在光的薄雾里;

The Stone of Star 星石

I came across a small shop in Brooklyn, with an old black woman selling her stones on a table at the innermost stand. At first glance, I picked a white stone with light gray lines. Looking deep into my eyes, the woman told me that this was a howlite stone that controlled crown chakra. I bought the stone and went back home. After supper, I lit a candle for meditation. Holding the stone in my palm, I heard a wind bell ringing outside the window.
Suddenly, I felt that the stone in my hand turned into a white bird, with a little gray on its tail, flying in the sky. From the bird's perspective, I saw a green forest, dotted with towers and buildings made of stones. At the edge of the forest, there came the sea, extending to the horizon.
Then I saw the universe and the galaxies, and everything turned into pure energy among the stars. The galaxies had no temperature, going past us in a magnificent way. I yelled in my head excitedly, it turned out I was a star as well. I was a star.

Moss Garden in Winter

Dreamed about arriving in a temple;
The weather is just turning cold.
The first snow descends,
On the rocks out of the temple,
On the moss and orchid.
I asked the monk about the trail to the mountain,
If it’s covered by snow.
Monk says the snow several days ago was all over his face and kasaya,
The kasaya and robe under snow,
Is also like moss and orchid.

The Library of Babel

The work is collected by Yixian Chen, as a support to the project.

Walking along a road with cyan low-rise buildings on both sides,
Looking forward quickly,
My sight flew past round pools one by one,
With blue water and colorful mosaics inside.
Then I saw the stone tower again.
But this time I went inside.
Climbing up its spiral staircase,
I saw books.
So many of them, extending all the way, with no limit in all directions.
I realized that I had arrived at the Library of Babel,
With books,
Written with golden ink,
Protected with dark red, dark blue and dark green covers.
Titled with words on their spines that I can’t read.

Lost Lover

At night,
In May,
In Beijing,
Taking off my shoes and carrying them by hand,
Walking with you barefoot,
The cold grass with dewdrops was cold.
Colder than -
New York after snow in May.
I had never been drunk,
Never seen you drunk,
Only knew that,
You didn't talk when you were drunk.
Lying on the rooftop with eyes closed,
Darling, I lost my love today.
You said.

The Ripple of Light

The work is collected by Zhang En, as a support to the project.

Mind travels in the darkness,
Going across the ripples waved by karma,
Until Alaya-vijnana wakes up in the amniotic fluid of evening,
And sailing towards paramita with paper boats.
Love, begins in the birth of the universe,
And repeats its endless recycles in every life.
Life is a theatre that reenacts again and again,
Until comedy and tragedy, drama and opera,
All mixed together and become the ripple of Light.

This project is organized by a group of young creative professionals in New York, who have contributed their spare time to realize a dance theatre that aims to bring healing power to the audiences. Because of the peculiarities of the performance, we can only accommodate 12 people per show, and cannot cover our cost through regular ticket sales like traditional theaters. Therefore, we are launching this crowdfunding campaign, hoping to realize the dream through everyone's efforts.
