Waste Not is a new project that I started in December 2015. I collect abandoned objects form daily life, such as worn out clothes, burn out bulbs, abandoned calligraphy, broken umbrella and dirty shower curtain, and make hats out of these materials. I believe that they carry important memories of us and our beloved ones. I want to give them a new life by transforming them into hats.

Whisper in the Green 绿中低语

Whisper in the Green 绿之低语, 2022. Straw hat base from New Jersey, printed fabric from artist Han Qin, acorn from the street of New York, ceramic beads made by artist Renqian Yang, and a vintage hat pin as a gift from Morgan O'Hara.

Whisper in the Green,
She wonders in a field undefined by language.
A runaway from home,
A return back to home.
She responds to the calling back in nature.

This hat is specially made for Nicole, a curious spirit and lovely girl with open heart. We met at Brooklyn Museum unexpectedly on a Wednesday escaping from work.

绿之低语,
她在未经语言定义的领域漫游。
离开家的旅程,
回到家的旅程,
她回到自然的召唤之中。


City Light 城市灯光

The traffic lights and city lights will lose the sharpness in the rain. The sparkling lights resemble lunar halo and create a screen of beads. This hat features vintage clothing bottons from Morgan O'Hara, to imitate the city lights in the rain.

在雨雾中,城市车流和楼房的灯光会失去清晰的棱角,在视野中变成模糊的亮点,像是月晕一般,连成一片帘幕。这顶礼帽用艺术家摩根.奥哈拉赠予的旧纽扣制作,像是雨中的万家灯火。


Clay Iris 陶鸢尾

Ceramic artist Renqian Yang gave me some ceramic fragments from her studio, which look like blooming irises. So I selected some fabrics from a broken Monet's Pond umbrella, as a tribute to the Impressionism artists Van Gogh and Monet. Now it belongs to Cindy Du in New York.

陶瓷艺术家杨人倩赠与我一些烧制剩下的陶瓷碎片,看起来像恣意生长的鸢尾花。用上一些莫奈旧伞的布料和它呼应,是对梵高和莫奈的致敬。现在属于纽约的Cindy.


BAMBOO 竹

来纽约之前在北京的南锣鼓巷买到了一块青花碎瓷片,据说来自一个打碎的清代的瓷碗。“弄笔必竹如东,”断续的文字别有一番意蕴,让人猜测各种可能的组合。


SILVER FISH 银鱼

Found a silver fish charm from the bottom of my tool box. How did it get into my possession I cannot recall, but it did swim all the way from China to New York, just like me. I painted a glittering pond on the silk fascinator base to match the free-flowing fish.
在箱底找出一条银色小鱼,实在记不得它的来源,只记得一路从中国游到了纽约,和我一样。于是画了一片斑驳的水塘,鱼儿畅游其中。现属于纽约的Monica。


Peacock 孔雀

A feather from a necklace is this hat's inspiration. The peacock's feathers and golden wings dazzle and form a beautiful contrast. While he migrates south for the winter, he rests on a branch.

从项链取下的一片羽翼,是这顶帽子的灵感来源。孔雀羽毛和金色的翅膀相映生辉,尚未南飞,暂居枝头。


Swan Lake 天鹅湖

Hiding in layers of mesh and cloth, like a swan dancing gracefully. She is in the clouds, around the galaxy, and in an eternal dreaming state.
藏在层层薄纱之间,像天鹅一样起舞,如在云中,如在星河中,如在永恒的梦中。


Golden Leaf 金树叶

Inspired by an Easter luncheon at St Paul's Lutheran Church of Williamsburg. We were all dressed in white and wore a golden, olive wreath. The joy from the gathering continues to linger in my heart. I made the hats with the golden olive branches, along with fabrics colored like the forest.

去威廉姆斯堡St. Paul's Lutheran教堂参加复活节午餐,每个人都要身穿白色衣服,头戴金色橄榄叶环,欢乐的聚会结束,于是用留下的金树叶做了帽子,藏在森林色彩的布料之中。

 

 


LITTLE BONE 小骨头

Michele Fan’s ceramic studio Atelier F was officially established in 2015, and now her ceramics are slowly filling a shelf full. She gave me some little white ceramic cones that she uses to test the kiln temperature for my Waste Not series. They look like little bones against the black background color.

小韵的陶瓷工作室Atelier F于2015年正式创立,不知不觉已经做了整整一个架子的瓷。她赠予我一些烧瓷时用来检测窑内温度的白色小瓷片来创作物尽其用系列。在黑色的底色上,它们像一片片小骨头。


STELLA WIND 星际风

Feel the wind from a grain of sand, feel the wind from a piece of flower; feel the wind from the earth; and feel the wind from the universe. Now it belongs to Ms. Yu from Chengdu. She likes nature and gardening and touches earth and sky.

一粒沙之风,一片花之风,大地之风及星际之风,都是同样的风。现在属于成都的虞小姐,她喜欢植物、自然,大地和天际的气息。


OLIVE CONE 橄榄瓷锥

Olive Cone 橄榄瓷锥, 2016.3. Black cotton fascinator base from Fujian; aqua sinamay fabric from London; abandoned porcelain corns from Michele Fan, leftover Easter olive decoration from St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Williamsburg.

Michelle gave me a ceramic cone from her studio, and I decided to make her a hat with it. The golden olive leaf came from leftover Easter decorations at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. It comes from a place, and to that place it returns.

小韵工作室剩下来的瓷锥,做一顶帽子给她。金色的橄榄叶来自威廉姆斯堡St. Paul's Lutheran教堂遗留下来的复活节装饰。来于某处,复归于某处。

 


PLUM BLOSSOM IN THE SNOW 踏雪寻梅

The first snow of this year has not arrived because of the warm winter, yet I can not wait to go out in the snow and enjoy the plum blossom. I brought a Hanfu with plum blossom pattern from Chengdu to New York, and it’s eventually worn out after accompanying me through seasons of tea ceremonies. So I kept some pieces of fabric to make hats. This hat now belongs to Cherry in New York. She enjoys every seasonal flower and collects furniture and hats with floral designs.

这个暖冬,迟迟不来第一场雪,等不及要踏雪寻梅。一件梅花汉服从成都带到纽约,陪我经过了好几个春夏秋冬,好几场一期一会的茶会,终于还是破损了。舍不得扔掉,于是留下了一些它的片段,做成帽子。碎玻璃来自被乌冬打碎的花瓶,像一片碎冰覆盖在梅花上。现属于纽约的Cherry,她喜欢收藏有四季花卉设计的家具和帽子。


EYES ON ME 看着我

I started the series “Waste Not” to make hats out of unwanted or abandoned materials to give them a new life. After three years’ use, walking in the rain with my monet umbrella from The Metropolitan Museum of Art feels like walking in a wet water lilies pond. When it finally broke, I removed the fabric from the umbrella and turned it into water lilies on the hat. A hazelnut, collected by my sister from her fall excursion in New Haven, becomes the eye of the flower.

一把大都会买来的莫奈旧伞,用了三年。每次下雨时都像走在湿润的睡莲池塘,终于坏了,于是拆下来布,让它变成帽子上的睡莲。姐姐在纽黑文秋游时采摘来的榛仁变成了花的眼睛。


WRITE ROSE 写玫瑰

I started the series “Waste Not” to make hats out of unwanted or abandoned materials and give them a new life. This hat is decorated with paper roses made from artist Wei Jia’s calligraphy. Based in New York, Wei Jia makes collages from handmade paper, ink paintings and calligraphies. Through the repetitive processes of tearing and pasting, experiences of coincidence and certainty are created. Practicing calligraphy becomes his daily routine, and more importantly, his inspiration for art making.

这顶帽子用韦佳写过的书法草稿做成玫瑰。长居纽约的艺术家韦佳用手工纸和水墨做拼贴,通过重复的撕与贴创造偶然与必然的体验。他每天都会坚持练习书法,是生活的一部分,也是他艺术的灵感。

Practicing calligraphy becomes his daily routine, and more importantly, his inspiration for art making.

这顶帽子用上了韦佳写过的书法草稿片段,做好后发现刚好有“既”字显露。长居纽约的艺术家韦佳用手工纸和水墨做拼贴,通过重复的撕与贴创造偶然与必然的体验。他每天都会坚持练习书法,是生活的一部分,也是他艺术的灵感。
