Beijing - MIA space is honored to announce the new exhibition Chapeau Echo: Girl With a Hat, on view from September 3 to October 2, 2016. The opening reception will be held on September 3, 4–6pm.

The exhibition displays fifteen hats from Chapeau Echo, a vintage style hat brand founded by Echo He, a gallerist, curator, vintage hat maker and writer based in New York. This is Echo’s second solo exhibition in Beijing. The exhibition features a collection of works from 2015-2016, all designed and handmade by Echo He. Inspired by the natural scenes of Brooklyn, New York, classic and contemporary art, as well as people’s stories of lovers and friends, each hat is carefully crafted by Echo He and has a unique story.

This exhibition transforms MIA’s white cube space into a world where old and new meet. Echo collaborated with carpenter Zhang Zhiwei from Hangzhou to design and fabricate vintage-style hat stands, referencing classic painting The Millinery Shop by French artist Edgar Degas. The new creations are juxtaposed with vintage hat stands found in flea markets and antique stores from across the United States.

The hats are displayed in a setting designed to resemble a 19th century still life oil painting, dried branches, skulls, old books and candles set against fresh flowers, fruit and fine wine. Wax drips from bottles and walls, reminding visitors the passage of time. A photograph of a girl wearing a hat sits on an easel, like an unfinished painting in an artist’s studio. The photograph comes from a collaborative project between New York-based photographer Wang Zeyang and Echo He. Inspired by 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's renowned painting Girl with a Pearl Earring, Wang created a series of photography that look like 17th-century Dutch portraits.

In this exhibition, each hat’s story is written on a card; visitors will need to take the cards out from envelopes in order to read them. The act of opening the envelopes and extracting the messages gives visitors the feeling that they are reading a letter from long ago.

CHAPEAU ECHO: Born in New York city in 2014. The vintage style hat brand was created by Echo He, a gallerist, curator, vintage hat maker and writer based in New York. Echo He received her BA degree in Business Administration from Peking University, and her MA degree in Visual Arts Administration from New York University. Now she works at Pace Gallery and co-founded and directed Fou Gallery, an apartment gallery and creative lab in Brooklyn. Till now, over 200 hats have been made. All are designed, painted and handmade by Echo. Each hat has a unique design and a story behind it. Just like Chapeau Echo are collected by people all over the world. The logo of Chapeau Echo is drawn by artist Zhang Xiaogang and designed by New York based designer Mine Suda. More information can be found on www.chapeauecho.com
